Short Course: LC-MS, the analytical tool of today

The one-day Short Course in LC–MS gives a rapid overview of LC–MS. This course is especially meant for people with a general interest in the field, e.g., laboratory heads and R&D managers, or as an orientation on the applicability of LC–MS for one's own field of interest. 

It provides you with a basic knowledge of the principles and technologies of LC–MS and pays attention to a general overview of one or two important application areas of LC–MS, e.g., environmental analysis, pharmaceutical applications, or peptide and protein analysis.

Typical Outline of the Course

The course consists of four lecture session (ca. 75 min each). In each session, there is ample time of discussion and questions.

Session 1: Identifying the analytical problems for LC–MS

Attention is paid to the history and principles of LC–MS and LC-MS-MS. In addition, this session identifies the type of analytical problems LC-MS is suited for. As such, this session provides a basic understanding needed in the other three sessions.

Session 2: Solutions by LC-MS: Instrumentation overview

Current interfaces for LC-MS (electrospray, ionspray and APCI) are discussed. Attention is paid to aspects related to flow-rate and mobile-phase composition. In addition, different types of mass analyzers are compared: how and when about single quadrupole, triple quadrupole, ion-trap and time-of-flight instruments.

Session 3: Potential and limitations of LC-MS in quantitative and qualitative analysis

Important application areas of LC–MS are reviewed, especially in the fields of environmental and pharmaceutical analysis. Special attention is paid to the analytical strategies involved. Topics involved are: screening for knowns and unknowns, quantitative bioanalysis, impurity and metabolic profiling, structure elucidation.

Session 4: Perspectives of LC-MS

The last session pays attention to additional applications of LC-MS, especially in more advanced areas: high-throughput analysis and screening, combinatorial chemistry, biochemistry and biotechnology, proteomics.
